Hyderabad Cracks Down on Drunk Driving: Over 500 Offenders Caught

In a significant crackdown on drunk driving, Hyderabad's city traffic police have taken a firm stance, catching 536 drivers under the influence of alcohol in a large-scale operation. This recent surge in enforcement highlights a growing concern for road safety in the region.

The operation, conducted over the weekend, targeted both Hyderabad and Cyberabad Commissionerate limits, revealing a startling number of intoxicated drivers. Among the offenders, two-wheeler riders dominated the statistics, with 242 caught in Hyderabad and 187 in Cyberabad. This raises concerns about the prevalence of drunk driving among motorcyclists and scooter riders, who are particularly vulnerable on the roads. The police also apprehended 37 four-wheeler drivers in Hyderabad and 29 in Cyberabad, along with a smaller number of three-wheeler drivers.

The blood alcohol content (BAC) levels of the offenders were alarming, with 32 individuals in Hyderabad registering levels between 200 mg/100 ml and 300 mg/100 ml or higher. These levels significantly impair driving ability and reaction time, increasing the risk of accidents and fatalities. The police have sent a clear message that such behavior will not be tolerated, emphasizing the potential charges under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which can result in up to 10 years' imprisonment.

The courts have already disposed of 45 drunk driving cases from the previous week, with penalties ranging from fines to social service. This swift action by the authorities sends a strong signal to potential offenders, aiming to deter future incidents and promote safer roads in Hyderabad and its surrounding areas.
