Hyderabad's Narcotics Enforcement Wing (H-NEW) took a unique approach to tackling drug abuse, hosting a counselling session for drug consumers and their families, emphasizing rehabilitation over retribution. This event, held at the Old Commissioner of Police office, marked a significant shift in addressing a pressing issue affecting over 100 identified drug consumers in the city.
The session, organized in conjunction with a case registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985, at Langar Houz police station, attracted 40 drug consumers and their concerned parents and relatives. The primary goal was to educate parents about the perils of drug abuse, enabling them to detect early signs of substance dependency and understand their pivotal role in supporting their children's recovery.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Gaikwad Vaibhav Raghunath, in his address, urged a reevaluation of drug abuse as a critical social and public health issue, not merely a law-and-order problem. He encouraged parents to be vigilant, maintain open dialogue with their children, and collaborate with law enforcement to prevent drug-related activities. The DCP also outlined the legal repercussions of drug abuse and trafficking, fostering a comprehensive understanding of the issue.
The event concluded with an interactive session, where parents voiced their concerns and sought clarifications. DCP Raghunath emphasized the collective responsibility in building a drug-free society, advocating for sustained parental involvement and early professional intervention for behavioural changes. This initiative by H-NEW signifies a progressive step towards addressing drug abuse, focusing on support and rehabilitation, which could potentially shape Hyderabad's approach to drug-related issues.
