Hyderabad Police Warns of Sophisticated Traffic Scam

In a recent revelation, Khairatabad Zone DCP K Shilpavalli has exposed a surge in fraudulent traffic challan messages, even receiving such messages herself. This sophisticated scam has prompted the Hyderabad City Police to issue an urgent advisory, warning citizens of the dangers lurking in their text inboxes.

The scam involves fraudsters sending SMS messages to unsuspecting motorists, alleging pending traffic violations and providing phishing links. These links lead to fake websites designed to mimic the official government portal, tricking citizens into entering their sensitive information. Hyderabad City Police Commissioner VC Sajjanar described the scam's modus operandi, stating, "These fraudulent websites are designed to look identical to the real thing, and citizens, believing them to be genuine, are falling prey, leading to instant bank account compromises."

The DCP's personal experience highlights the scam's audacity. She received two SMS messages within three days, both with different secure-looking URLs, claiming traffic violations. Her quick thinking to report these messages to the official cybercrime platform, sancharsaathi.gov.in, likely prevented her from becoming a victim.

In response, the police have urged citizens to exercise caution. They advise verifying challan details only on the official e-Challan website and reporting suspicious messages immediately. This scam underscores the evolving nature of cyber threats and the importance of public awareness and vigilance in combating online fraud. As the authorities continue to investigate, the public is reminded to stay alert and treat unsolicited messages with skepticism, especially those requesting personal or financial information.
