In a move that could set a precedent for the sustainable use of religious land, the Andhra Pradesh government is leasing a significant portion of a temple's vast property for a solar power project. The state's endowments minister, Anam Ramanarayana Reddy, announced that approximately 106 acres of land belonging to the Sri Vedagiri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy temple will be leased to the Nellore Municipal Corporation for this purpose. This decision comes as a unique approach to harnessing renewable energy while also potentially benefiting the temple's finances.

The minister made this announcement during his visit to the ancient temple, where he offered prayers and reviewed ongoing development projects. The Sri Vedagiri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy temple, nestled amidst hilly terrain, boasts an impressive land bank of 1,100 acres. By leasing a portion of this land, the temple's governing body, Vedagiri Narasimha Swamy Devasthanams, aims to generate substantial revenue. Anam estimated an annual lease rental income of Rs 3 crore, a significant boost to the temple's finances.

This initiative is part of a broader development plan for the temple, which includes the reconstruction of the Sri Govindaraja Swamy temple, the creation of a Dhyana Mandir, and a new Annaprasadam canteen. The endowments department has allocated a substantial budget of Rs 8.7 crore for these projects. Furthermore, the department has earmarked Rs 78 crore for various development works at 57 ancient temples across the Nellore district, showcasing a commitment to preserving and enhancing religious sites.

The solar power project, a collaboration between the temple and the municipal corporation, is a unique approach to energy generation and land utilization.
