In a powerful display of solidarity and advocacy, the All India Democratic Women's Association (AIDWA) is set to host its 14th national conference in Hyderabad, shining a spotlight on women's dignity, safety, and economic empowerment. From January 25 to 28, this gathering will bring together influential voices, including legal experts, former ministers, and academics, to address pressing issues that affect women across India.

The choice of Telangana as the conference venue is significant. AIDWA general secretary Mariam Dhawale emphasized that the state was selected due to the unfulfilled promises made to its women. Honour killings, communal conflicts, and violence persist, casting a shadow over women's security. Moreover, a recent survey conducted across 22 states revealed a disturbing trend: microfinance agencies are pushing women, especially those in rural areas, into a debt trap. With interest rates as high as 200%, many women are struggling to repay loans, leading to further distress. The survey identified nearly 300 severely affected women in Telangana alone, underscoring the urgent need for intervention.

The conference will feature prominent speakers like Keerthi Singh, a senior advocate and former Law Commission member, and K.K. Shailaja, the former health minister of Kerala. They will address women's constitutional rights, economic independence, and the role of government in supporting women-led initiatives. AIDWA president P.K. Sreemathy advocates for reducing state reliance on liquor sales revenue and adopting welfare models that empower women economically. The event aims to mobilize women to safeguard democratic and secular values, fostering a sense of unity and collective action.

As the conference unfolds, participants will engage in crucial discussions, sharing experiences and strategies to tackle the multifaceted challenges women face. This gathering promises to be a catalyst for change, inspiring action and policy reforms to ensure women's dignity, safety, and economic well-being.
