Road Safety Awareness: A Call to Action for Young Drivers

In a powerful display of commitment to road safety, engineering students in Telangana were urged to take the wheel of responsibility and become champions of change. The Road Safety Awareness Programme, organised by the Telangana Transport Department and the NSS Cell of UCESTH, JNTUH, aimed to educate and inspire the next generation of drivers to adopt safer habits. The event, held at the UGC MMTC Auditorium, was a timely intervention as road accidents continue to claim lives, often due to preventable causes.

The programme's significance was underscored by the presence of esteemed officials, including Narasimha Reddy, Principal of UCESTH, and Joint Transport Commissioner Ramesh, who emphasised the critical role of youth in curbing road accidents. With nearly 18% of road accidents in India and Telangana attributed to overspeeding, the need for action is evident. Ramesh urged students to cultivate a culture of responsible driving, stating, "Healthy driving etiquette and discipline are the keys to unlocking safer roads."

The event featured a sobering presentation by South Zone RTO Ravinder, who shared alarming statistics on the rise of reckless driving behaviours among youth. Hyderabad Central Zone RTO Purushottam Reddy further emphasised the importance of adhering to safety rules, highlighting the tragic consequences of negligence. A video presentation vividly depicted the harsh reality of road accidents, leaving a lasting impression on the audience.

As the programme concluded, the students' collective pledge to uphold road safety stood as a testament to the event's success. Saida Naik, the NSS Coordinator, expressed gratitude, reflecting on the potential for positive change. This initiative marks a significant step towards fostering a safer road culture, where every driver is a guardian of safety, ensuring that the journey towards a brighter future is not marred by preventable tragedies.
