Zambia's DEC: Battling Drugs and Financial Crimes

Zambia's Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) is intensifying its efforts to combat the illicit drug trade and associated financial crimes, with a strong focus on border areas. In a recent media interview in Lusaka, DEC Public Relations Manager Allan Tamba shed light on the commission's multifaceted approach to tackling this pervasive issue.

The DEC's strategy revolves around three key pillars: drug supply reduction, drug demand reduction, and money laundering prevention. To disrupt drug trafficking networks, the commission conducts thorough investigations and prosecutions, aiming to apprehend offenders and dismantle their operations. This supply-side approach is complemented by demand reduction initiatives, which include prevention, education, and counselling for individuals vulnerable to drug abuse.

Tamba emphasized the commission's commitment to international cooperation, collaborating with local and global agencies to combat transnational crimes, especially along shared borders. This collaboration has led to significant seizures of illegal drugs and arrests related to international trafficking, thanks to enhanced intelligence networks and inter-agency partnerships.

As the DEC strengthens its presence in border regions, it is also engaging the public in this fight. Tamba urged citizens to be vigilant and report suspicious activities, emphasizing the importance of community involvement in preventing drug-related crimes. He stressed that by working together, law enforcement and the public can effectively protect Zambia's national security and development, ensuring a safer future for generations to come.
