Opposition Leader Condemns Police Action and Demands Answers

The Kerala Legislative Assembly witnessed heated exchanges as V.D. Satheesan, Leader of the Opposition, took to the floor with a scathing critique of recent events. His speech primarily targeted the police's handling of Congress protestors and the ongoing Special Investigation Team (SIT) inquiry into the Sabarimala gold controversy.

Satheesan vehemently condemned the police's actions during a protest march organized by the Youth Congress on August 30. The protest, which began at the Palayam Martyr's Square in Thiruvananthapuram, aimed to highlight the alleged corruption and mismanagement in the Vizhinjam port project. However, the peaceful demonstration took a turn when police personnel resorted to using force, including water cannons and tear gas, to disperse the crowd. The Opposition Leader accused the police of acting at the behest of the ruling party, alleging that the force used was excessive and unjustified. He demanded an explanation for the harsh treatment of protestors, many of whom were youth and students.

Furthermore, Satheesan expressed his discontent with the SIT's investigation into the disappearance of gold from the Sabarimala temple. He questioned the credibility of the probe, suggesting that the SIT was not functioning independently and was under political influence. The Opposition Leader's concerns were twofold: the slow pace of the investigation and the lack of transparency in the process. He urged the government to ensure the SIT operates without interference and brings the culprits to justice swiftly.

In a powerful statement, Satheesan asserted, "The government must respect democratic values and the right to peaceful protest. We demand an impartial investigation into the Vizhinjam project and the Sabarimala issue, free from political pressure. The people of Kerala deserve answers and accountability."
