Hyderabad Cracks Down on Drunk Driving with Strict Enforcement

The streets of Hyderabad and Cyberabad witnessed a surge in traffic enforcement over the weekend, resulting in a staggering 695 drunk driving cases. This two-day special drive, conducted by the local traffic police, aimed to curb the dangerous practice of driving under the influence. With a total of 399 and 296 cases booked in Hyderabad and Cyberabad, respectively, the operation sent a clear message to the public.

On January 23 and 24, Hyderabad's roads saw an intensive crackdown, with the majority of offenders being two-wheeler riders, accounting for 321 cases. The traffic police also booked 31 three-wheeler and 47 four-wheeler drivers. Simultaneously, Cyberabad's crackdown focused on similar violations, with 231 two-wheeler riders, 47 four-wheeler drivers, and 17 three-wheeler operators among the 296 booked.

The traffic police have emphasized the severity of drunk driving, warning that it can lead to fatal accidents. Offenders face harsh penalties, including imprisonment of up to 10 years and fines under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. This law treats drunk driving resulting in fatalities as culpable homicide, underscoring the authorities' commitment to road safety.

The recent enforcement drive is just one part of a broader strategy to tackle drunk driving. In the week preceding the operation, courts in Cyberabad disposed of 215 drunk driving cases, with sentences ranging from fines to jail time and social service. This comprehensive approach aims to deter potential offenders and promote a culture of responsible driving, ensuring the safety of all road users.
