Road Safety Awareness: A Lifesaving Mission in Telangana

In a state where nearly 8,000 lives are tragically lost each year due to road accidents, the message of prevention is more critical than ever. This was the focus of Joint Commissioner of Police Joel Davis's address at the Arrive Alive road safety campaign in Hyderabad. The event, held at the APJ Abdul Kalam Auditorium, aimed to empower the public with knowledge as the first line of defence against this devastating issue.

Davis revealed a startling fact: up to 80% of these fatalities could be prevented with basic safety measures. This statistic underscores the potential for positive change and the need for widespread awareness. The recent awareness session, a collaborative effort between the Hyderabad Traffic Police and Vasavi Engineering College, attracted over 600 attendees, including students and faculty. It focused on defensive driving, a technique that empowers drivers to avoid accidents even when faced with errors from other road users.

The event also addressed the broader impact of road accidents, which can have devastating socio-economic consequences for families. Joel Davis took this opportunity to clarify the Good Samaritan Act, reassuring bystanders that they can assist accident victims without fear of legal repercussions. He also highlighted the government's proactive measures, including directives for private hospitals to provide immediate treatment and potential reward systems for lifesavers.

DCP Traffic Rahul Hegde's message emphasised the importance of road safety as a shared responsibility, reminding attendees that roads are public spaces where traffic rules ensure equal access and safety for all. The campaign concluded with a call to action, encouraging students to become road safety ambassadors, potentially saving countless lives in Telangana.
