In a significant step towards ensuring women's safety in public spaces, the Telangana Women Safety Wing (WSW) has launched a comprehensive initiative in collaboration with various transport authorities. This coordinated effort aims to tackle the pervasive issue of harassment on public transport, offering a swift and efficient response system for victims.
The programme, an extension of the safe mobility initiative, empowers women to report incidents of harassment, such as groping or indecent exposure, directly to bus conductors, auto drivers, or the police emergency numbers 100/112. This simple yet effective reporting mechanism is a game-changer, addressing the reluctance many women feel in reporting such incidents due to the perceived lack of immediate action. The WSW's strategy is twofold: first, to provide an accessible reporting system, and second, to ensure a rapid response. Bus conductors and auto drivers, often the first witnesses to these crimes, are trained to act as first responders, escalating complaints to the police. This triggers the swift dispatch of patrol units, with specialized She Teams taking charge of investigations.
This initiative's strength lies in its collaborative approach, involving the TGSRTC, Metro Rail, transport department, ICCC, private bus operators, and auto drivers' associations across Hyderabad, Cyberabad, and Rachakonda. Each participating entity will appoint a dedicated nodal officer to facilitate smooth coordination, while the WSW will oversee case outcomes. By integrating the system with Dial 100/112, the authorities ensure a real-time response, a crucial aspect of effective crime deterrence. The WSW's commitment to this cause is further evident in their ongoing training sessions for bus conductors and awareness campaigns, emphasizing accountability and fostering a safer environment for women.
