In a disturbing resurgence, Hyderabad's battle against predatory loan apps has taken a dark turn. The city, once plagued by digital loan sharks, witnessed a brief respite following police interventions and awareness drives. However, the recent months have seen a chilling comeback, with two fresh cases of extortion and harassment reported to the Cyberabad cyber crime police.
The first victim, a 35-year-old private employee, fell into a financial abyss after borrowing from Safefastmoney.com and its affiliated apps. His initial loan of 122 lakh rupees spiraled into a repayment nightmare, with over 140 lakh rupees extracted from him. The ordeal didn't end there; he endured relentless harassment, blackmail, and public shaming. The lenders accessed his contacts, defamed him on WhatsApp, and sent abusive messages to his friends and family, leaving him traumatized.
Another victim, a 26-year-old, was lured into a similar trap by apps like Credit Insight and Loan Radar. Starting with a modest 19,000-rupee loan, he was entangled in a web of unauthorized disbursements, borrowing 12 lakh rupees and repaying nearly 14.7 lakh rupees. Despite his efforts, he faced threats and humiliation, with his photos morphed into obscene images and shared with his contacts.
Cyber crime officials, while acknowledging a recent decline in such complaints, are alarmed by this resurgence. "We are analyzing the details to identify the accused," said a senior official, urging victims to come forward swiftly to prevent further harassment. These cases highlight the urgent need for continued vigilance and action against illegal lending practices, ensuring Hyderabad's residents are protected from such predatory financial schemes.
