Hyderabad's New Year's Eve: A Sobering Reality Check

The new year celebrations in Hyderabad were marred by a staggering number of drunk driving cases, with the city police cracking down on over 2,700 motorists. This enforcement drive, aimed at ensuring road safety during the festive season, revealed a concerning trend among drivers, particularly those on two and three-wheelers.

The Hyderabad commissionerate took the lead in this operation, setting up checkpoints at 120 locations across the city. The statistics are eye-opening: out of the 1,198 cases booked, an overwhelming majority of 1,042 were two-wheeler riders, with a further 51 three-wheeler and 105 four-wheeler drivers caught under the influence. Malakpet emerged as the area with the highest number of cases, a startling 125, while Falaknuma recorded the lowest with nine.

The erstwhile Rachakonda commissionerate and Cyberabad police also contributed significantly to the drive, booking 605 and 928 cases, respectively. These numbers highlight a widespread issue that demands attention. The Uppal and LB Nagar traffic police in Rachakonda were particularly busy, each booking over 120 cases. In Cyberabad, Miyapur traffic police topped the list with 102 cases, while RC Puram saw the fewest with seven.

This operation serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers on our roads, especially during festive periods. With the accused facing legal consequences, including court appearances and license suspensions, the message is clear: drunk driving will not be tolerated. As the city moves forward, the focus must now shift to education, awareness, and stricter enforcement to curb this reckless behavior and ensure the safety of all road users.
