Hyderabad's Pedestrian Revolution: Clearing the Way for a Walkable City

Hyderabad, a bustling metropolis, is taking significant strides to address the challenges of urban living, with a particular focus on making the city more pedestrian-friendly. In a recent update, RV Karnan, the GHMC Commissioner, revealed that the civic body is actively removing footpath encroachments and constructing new Foot Over Bridges (FOBs) to ensure citizens' right to walk. This initiative, part of Operation ROPE (Removal of Obstructive Parking and Encroachments), has already cleared nearly 7,500 encroachments in the last year.

The city's parking woes are also being tackled with a multi-faceted approach. GHMC plans to implement an on-street smart parking management system, inspired by Singapore, starting with a pilot project in Khairatabad. Additionally, multi-level parking projects at iconic locations like KBR Park and Charminar will alleviate roadside parking issues. The introduction of digital meters and real-time occupancy tracking through mobile apps further enhances the efficiency of parking management.

Moreover, Hyderabad is addressing the issue of stray dogs with a comprehensive strategy. The 'Adopt a Pet' program encourages citizens to take responsibility for street dogs, and the Animal Birth Control (Dogs) Rules-2023 aims to reduce the stray dog population and minimize man-dog conflicts. GHMC is also taking steps to ensure responsible pet ownership, including registration and awareness campaigns.

As Hyderabad continues to develop, these initiatives demonstrate a commitment to creating a more livable and walkable city, where citizens can enjoy the benefits of urban life while navigating its challenges with ease. The city's efforts to improve pedestrian infrastructure and address parking and stray dog issues are a testament to its dedication to the well-being of its residents.
