Hyderabad Police Recover Stolen Funds in APK Fraud Cases

In a remarkable display of swift action and technological prowess, the Hyderabad Police have successfully recovered a significant portion of funds stolen in two separate APK fraud cases. This achievement underscores the critical importance of timely reporting and the potential for law enforcement to combat cybercrime effectively.

On December 5, a young software engineer in Yousufguda fell victim to a sophisticated scam. He received a WhatsApp message informing him of a traffic fine and was prompted to download an APK named M-Parivahan. Unbeknownst to him, this was a malicious app designed to steal personal information. The fraudsters accessed his SMS and email, intercepted OTPs, and made unauthorized purchases totaling 5.2 lakh on his ICICI Bank credit card. Fortunately, the victim's quick thinking led him to report the incident immediately to the '1930' cyber-helpline and the Hyderabad Cyber Crime police. The police, acting swiftly, coordinated with the bank and managed to secure a full refund for the victim.

In another incident on November 10, an Amberpet resident installed a fake RBL Bank app, unknowingly granting fraudsters access to his bank account. The scammers used his OTPs to purchase gift cards worth 1.25 lakh. The victim's prompt complaint to the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal triggered a rapid response from the Hyderabad Cyber Crime police, who cancelled the gift card orders and recovered 1 lakh.

"The golden hour is crucial in cybercrime cases," a Hyderabad Cyber Crime official emphasized. "Reporting incidents immediately gives us the best chance to trace and recover funds before they disappear into the digital underworld." This success story highlights the importance of public awareness and cooperation with law enforcement in the ongoing battle against cybercrime. As the digital landscape evolves, so must the strategies to protect citizens from online fraud.
