In a shocking revelation, Hyderabad's drug enforcement authorities have exposed a network of ganja users, with a significant number being medical students. The Elite Action Group for Drug Law Enforcement (EAGLE) has identified approximately 100 suspected ganja users, a startling figure that raises concerns about drug abuse within educational institutions.
The investigation began with the arrest of Arafath Ahmed Khan, a ganja peddler from Risala Bazar, who was found with 2kg of the substance. During interrogation, Arafath disclosed a web of transactions, leading the authorities to a private medical college in Ghanpur, Medchal district. Among the identified users, 32 are medical students, nine of whom tested positive for ganja. This discovery sheds light on a potential drug problem within the medical community, a group often seen as future leaders in healthcare.
The investigation further led to the arrest of a woman in Irani Colony, Bidar, who has allegedly been involved in the ganja trade since 2010. Her bank account transactions, totaling 1.5 crore in the past year, indicate a substantial illegal operation. Arafath's payments to her alone amounted to 6 lakh, suggesting a well-established supply chain. The woman's connections to peddlers in Parli, Maharashtra, highlight the inter-state nature of this drug network.
As the authorities continue their pursuit of the remaining 68 identified individuals, the focus shifts to addressing the root causes of drug abuse among students. The college authorities, now aware of the issue, have taken action by sending the affected students to a de-addiction center. This incident serves as a wake-up call for educational institutions and law enforcement agencies to collaborate in preventing and addressing drug-related issues.
