Hyderabad Airport Sees Surge in Mid-Air Sexual Misconduct Cases

In a concerning trend, Hyderabad's Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) has witnessed two separate incidents of alleged sexual harassment on flights within a fortnight. This alarming statistic raises questions about passenger safety and the prevalence of such misconduct during air travel.

The most recent incident occurred on Indigo flight 6E-86 from Dammam on December 13. Balakrishna Ramesh, a 58-year-old passenger, allegedly engaged in inappropriate behavior towards a female crew member. He was reported to have rubbed his arm against her and later touched her inappropriately while moving towards the toilet. The crew's swift action led to Ramesh being declared an unruly passenger, a designation that carries significant consequences.

This incident follows a similar occurrence on November 28, involving Biniyam Nazar, a passenger on Air India flight AI-2204 from Dubai. Nazar allegedly misbehaved with a stewardess and left an offensive handwritten note. The RGIA police have taken swift action in both cases, registering charges under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including sexual harassment and insulting the modesty of a woman.

These incidents highlight the importance of addressing in-flight misconduct and ensuring the safety and dignity of all passengers and crew. The prompt response by airline representatives and law enforcement sends a strong message that such behavior will not be tolerated. As the investigations progress, the aviation industry and authorities must collaborate to implement preventive measures and raise awareness, fostering a safer environment for all air travelers.
