In a significant move to boost irrigation in the north coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu is set to embark on a tour to review the progress of pending projects. This announcement comes after a review meeting in Vijayawada, where Water Resources Minister Nimmala Ramanaidu emphasized the government's commitment to revitalizing the region's irrigation sector.
The meeting shed light on the previous administration's neglect of irrigation projects, with Minister Ramanaidu stating that the YSRCP regime made no substantial investments in this area. In contrast, the TDP government's 'Uttarandhra Sujala Sravanthi' initiative, launched during its 2014-2019 tenure, aimed to enhance irrigation but was stalled. Now, the coalition government is taking decisive action to rectify this situation.
The Chief Minister has instructed officials to devise an action plan for completing major projects within two years, with an estimated budget exceeding 12,000 crore. Nine priority projects, including the Vamsadhara, Thotapalli, and Janjhavathi reservoir, are set to receive immediate attention. These projects, once completed, will bring 1.24 lakh acres under new irrigation and stabilize water supply for an additional 2.48 lakh acres. Minister Ramanaidu emphasized their holistic approach, addressing not just civil works but also rehabilitation and resettlement.
The government's determination to repay its debt of gratitude to North Andhra is evident. By prioritizing these irrigation projects, the administration aims to ensure that every acre receives water, a stark contrast to the previous government's record. With the involvement of various stakeholders, including engineers and representatives from implementing agencies, the coalition government is taking concrete steps to transform Andhra's irrigation landscape, particularly in the north coastal region.
