The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) is taking decisive action to address a concerning rise in accidents on the iconic PVNR Expressway, a 11-km stretch renowned as one of India's longest elevated roads. The expressway, which connects the city to the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA), has seen a startling increase in accidents, with data revealing a doubling of incidents from five in 2024 to 13 in 2025, including four fatal accidents. This alarming trend has prompted the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) to request immediate intervention.

In response, the HMDA is set to introduce a comprehensive safety measure by installing Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras and speed detection systems along the entire expressway. These systems, already being implemented on the Outer Ring Road (ORR), have proven effective in enhancing traffic monitoring and curbing violations. Regional Transport Commissioner K Ilambarithi emphasised the need for such measures, stating that "several arterial roads and high-traffic expressways within the HMDA area lack automated enforcement, leading to unsafe driving behaviours and road crashes."

The new surveillance infrastructure will be strategically placed at every fifth pillar, ensuring continuous monitoring. Once operational, the system will automatically detect vehicles exceeding speed limits or breaking traffic rules, enabling efficient enforcement without manual intervention. This initiative aims to deter speeding and dangerous overtaking, which have been identified as significant contributors to accidents on this high-speed corridor.

With the tender process for the safety infrastructure soon to be initiated, the HMDA is taking a proactive approach to road safety. This move is expected to improve driving discipline, enhance traffic management, and, most importantly, significantly reduce the number of accidents on the PVNR Expressway, making it a safer route for commuters and pedestrians alike.
