In the digital age, where technology is both a boon and a bane, Telangana residents have witnessed a startling decline in cyber fraud losses, with a 63% drop in reported cases translating to a Rs 100 crore reduction in financial losses. This significant improvement, from Rs 176 crore in 2024 to Rs 76 crore in 2025, is a testament to the success of awareness campaigns and the resilience of the public. However, the battle against cybercrime is far from over, as fraudsters adapt their tactics to prey on the uninformed.
The Telangana Cyber Security Bureau (TGCSB) has revealed that despite the overall decrease in cases, several individuals have fallen victim to digital arrest scams, losing substantial amounts. In one shocking incident, a victim was coerced into transferring Rs 3.3 crore over two days, believing they were under digital arrest for an alleged illegal transaction. TGCSB director Shikha Goel emphasized the importance of public awareness, stating, "There is nothing called digital arrest. The moment you receive such a call, hang up. Fraudsters exploit ignorance."
The TGCSB's six-week Fraud Ka Full Stop campaign, in partnership with The Times of India, aims to educate citizens about various cyber threats, including digital arrest, sextortion, and cyber slavery. This initiative is crucial as sextortion scams have cost Telangana residents Rs 14.6 crore in the last three years, with scammers using morphed explicit videos to blackmail victims. The campaign's focus on public education is a proactive approach to empower citizens, ensuring they don't become easy targets for cybercriminals.
As the war against cyber fraud continues, Telangana's progress in reducing financial losses serves as a beacon of hope. However, the ongoing scams underscore the need for sustained vigilance and education. The TGCSB's efforts to raise awareness and provide practical advice are vital steps towards a safer digital environment for all.
