As the New Year's Eve celebrations approach, Hyderabad's city police are taking proactive measures to ensure road safety, launching a dedicated week-long campaign against drunk driving. With a strong message of zero tolerance, the police aim to curb the dangerous practice that often leads to accidents and fatalities.

The crackdown, initiated on Wednesday, witnessed the deployment of seven additional police platoons and the establishment of checkpoints at a staggering 120 junctions across the commissionerate. The urgency and seriousness of the operation were evident when Police Commissioner VC Sajjanar personally supervised midnight inspections at Banjara Hills, a popular nightlife hub. The results were immediate and significant, with 304 motorists, including a minor, booked for driving under the influence of alcohol within the first two days. Their vehicles were seized, and they now face hefty fines, potential imprisonment, and the loss of their driving licenses.

Commissioner Sajjanar emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, "There will be zero tolerance." He counselled violators, highlighting the risks associated with drunk driving, which endanger not only the driver but also innocent commuters. The police are urging revellers to plan ahead, use designated drivers or cabs, and are appealing to event organisers and hotels to facilitate safe transport options.
