Hyderabad Airport Sees Two Arrests for In-Flight Sexual Misconduct

In a concerning trend, Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) in Hyderabad has witnessed two arrests for alleged sexual misconduct within a fortnight. The incidents, occurring on separate flights, have raised questions about passenger behavior and the safety of airline staff.

The most recent case unfolded on December 13, when Indigo flight 6E-86 from Dammam touched down at RGIA. During the flight, Balakrishna Ramesh, a 58-eighty-year-old passenger, allegedly engaged in inappropriate behavior. He was accused of rubbing his arm against a female crew member and subsequently touching her inappropriately while en route to the toilet. The lead crew member's confrontation led to Ramesh's admission of misconduct, resulting in his immediate classification as an unruly passenger, as mandated by the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security.

This incident follows a similar occurrence on November 28, involving Biniyam Nazar, a techie from Kerala. While on Air India flight AI-2204 from Dubai, Nazar allegedly harassed a stewardess, leaving a handwritten note filled with obscene and abusive content. The RGIA police promptly took action, detaining Nazar upon arrival and registering a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including assault, sexual harassment, and insulting the modesty of a woman.

These incidents underscore the challenges faced by airline staff, particularly women, in ensuring passenger safety and maintaining a professional environment. The swift action by the RGIA police in both cases sends a clear message that such misconduct will not be tolerated. As the investigations progress, the aviation industry and authorities must collaborate to enhance safety measures and address the root causes of such disturbing behavior.
