In a significant development, the Hyderabad Narcotic Enforcement Wing (H-NEW) has successfully apprehended and deported a Nigerian national, Johnkennedy Chukwuemeka Okoro, for overstaying his visa and engaging in illegal drug-related activities. This operation highlights the city's ongoing battle against drug trafficking and the role of foreign nationals in this illicit trade.
Okoro, aged 43, originally from Imo State, Nigeria, entered India in 2012 on a business visa. He initially settled in Mumbai, working in the garment industry. However, his legal status changed when his passport and visa expired, and he continued to reside in the country illegally. Authorities discovered that he frequently travelled between Hyderabad and Bengaluru, raising suspicions about his activities.
The H-NEW, acting on credible information, intercepted Okoro within the Asif Nagar Police Station limits. While no drugs were found on him, the subsequent investigation revealed his involvement in drug peddling. The police statement emphasized that "he became involved in drug-peddling activities to earn easy money," a concerning trend among some foreign nationals overstaying their visas.
The deportation of Okoro marks the 22nd such case handled by H-NEW since its establishment. This year alone, 10 foreign nationals have been deported for similar visa violations and illegal activities. The police urged the public to be vigilant and report any suspicious activities, especially regarding drug abuse, to the dedicated HNEW mobile number. This operation underscores the importance of strict immigration enforcement and the ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking in Hyderabad.
