Hyderabad Police Target Dating Apps for Explicit Content

In a bold move, the Hyderabad cybercrime police have taken a stand against the growing trend of dating apps facilitating sexually explicit content. With a suo-moto case registered, the spotlight is on 37 mobile applications, some with millions of downloads, accused of promoting indecent video interactions.

The case originated from the vigilant observations of Constable Ch Venu Gopal during routine web patrolling. Gopal's complaint revealed a disturbing pattern: users, lured by the promise of free profiles, were then encouraged to purchase virtual tokens to access live video chats with female hosts. These calls, according to the constable, swiftly descended into vulgarity, with women exposing themselves or directing users to WhatsApp for more explicit content.

The police have identified a concerning trend where these apps, marketed as 'safe dating' or 'friend-making' platforms, are essentially gateways to sex-based transactions. The complaint highlights the moral degradation and legal violations, including the indecent representation of women and the transmission of obscene material, as outlined in the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, 1986.

With a multi-sectional case registered, the cybercrime officials are now focused on unmasking the operators behind these apps. "We are contacting the Google Play Store for app details and will investigate the individuals, locations, and revenue generation involved," said a senior official. The police suspect a sophisticated network and are employing digital forensics to unravel the operation, with the sale of virtual tokens being a key revenue stream. This investigation promises to be a significant step in curbing the exploitation of users and the degradation of women's modesty under the guise of digital dating.
