Telangana Tackles Addiction Crisis with IMH Expansion

In a significant move to combat the escalating addiction crisis, the Telangana health department is expanding the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) in Erragadda, Hyderabad. This expansion aims to address the growing concern of substance abuse cases, particularly among adolescents and young adults, by providing much-needed additional resources and support.

The current Hyderabad centre, the sole government-run de-addiction facility in Telangana, is overwhelmed with a monthly influx of hundreds of substance abuse cases, despite having only 20 beds. Recognizing this critical situation, the IMH expansion will increase capacity to 60 beds, offering dedicated counselling services and essential diagnostic support, which are currently lacking. The expansion plan also includes the establishment of regional de-addiction centres in four districts: Adilabad, Nizamabad, Mahabubabad, and Khammam. These centres will operate under a hub-and-spoke model, with the IMH as the anchor, ensuring improved accessibility for those in need across the state.

Dr. Anita Rayirala, superintendent of IMH, emphasized the importance of this expansion, stating that it is crucial given the high volume of drug abuse cases among young people aged 16 to 30 years. Common addictions in this age group include alcohol, cannabis, tobacco, and even psychoactive drugs like cocaine, LSD, and opioids. The expanded IMH will provide a comprehensive range of services, including detoxification, de-addiction, rehabilitation, and group counselling, supported by an increased number of psychologists and social workers.

The state's commitment to strengthening addiction treatment infrastructure reflects a broader recognition of the need for comprehensive care, addressing not only medical treatment but also psychological support and accurate diagnostic capabilities.
