Hyderabad's Traffic Vigilantes: Citizens Take Charge

Hyderabad's streets are under scrutiny, not just by the watchful eyes of the traffic police but also by its citizens. In a remarkable display of civic responsibility, residents have become active participants in traffic management, aiding the police in enforcing the rules.

Over the past five months, the city's traffic cops have issued a staggering 30,000 challans, amounting to Rs 1 crore in fines, based on vigilant citizens' complaints. These 'traffic vigilantes' utilize social media platforms like Twitter, WhatsApp, and Facebook to report various offenses, from the common helmetless riding and signal jumping to more dangerous acts like triple riding and wrong-side driving. Each report is meticulously documented with photos and videos, providing undeniable evidence.

The surge in citizen engagement has not gone unnoticed by the authorities. A dedicated team at the commissioner's office is tasked with monitoring these social media channels, ensuring that no complaint goes unheard. This initiative has led to a significant increase in challans, with 50,000 issued in 2024, 44,000 of which came from the Cyberabad commissionerate alone, resulting in Rs 1.5 crore in penalties. The trend continues in 2025, with 70% of that amount already collected in just six months.

"Citizens' assistance is invaluable in our efforts to penalize offenders," emphasizes Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Rahul Hegde BK. This collaborative approach not only ensures that traffic rules are respected but also fosters a sense of community involvement in maintaining law and order. As Hyderabad's residents continue to keep a watchful eye on its streets, the city moves towards a safer and more disciplined future, one challan at a time.
