Hyderabad Cracks Down on Drunk Driving for New Year's Safety

In a proactive move to ensure road safety during the festive season, Hyderabad Police have launched an intensive week-long campaign against drunk driving. With a zero-tolerance approach, the police aim to curb the dangerous practice that often leads to accidents and fatalities. The operation, commencing on Wednesday, has already made a significant impact, with a substantial number of motorists facing legal consequences.

The city's police commissioner, VC Sajjanar, led by example, personally overseeing the midnight inspections in Banjara Hills. The operation's initial night resulted in 304 bookings, including a minor, for driving under the influence. This swift action sends a clear message to potential violators, as the penalties are severe. Offenders face hefty fines of Rs 10,000, possible imprisonment for six months, and the very real threat of losing their driving licenses.

The crackdown, which will continue until New Year's Eve, involves an additional seven police platoons and 120 checkpoints strategically placed across the commissionerate. This heightened presence aims to deter drunk driving and promote responsible behavior. The police have also urged the public to play their part by using designated drivers or taxis and reporting any reckless driving via the 100 dial service.

Commissioner Sajjanar's commitment to road safety is evident: "There will be zero tolerance... such negligence puts not only the driver but also innocent commuters at risk." This campaign reflects a broader trend in Indian cities to prioritize road safety, especially during festive periods. The success of this initiative will be measured in the reduction of alcohol-related accidents and the potential lives saved.
