Hyderabad Police Close Muslim Martial Arts Camp

Hyderabad police have shut down a martial arts training camp organized by the Muslim group Darsgah-E-Jihad-O-Shahadat (DJS) in the city's Saidabad area. This move comes amid heightened tensions and a series of alleged mob lynching incidents across the country, sparking concerns among intelligence agencies.

The DJS, founded in 1983, has a history of providing self-defense training to Muslim youth, with a recent focus on boys aged 12 to 16. The organization's president, Mohammed Abdul Majid, defended their actions, stating that DJS has trained 50,000 Muslim youths in self-defense, a necessity in the current climate. He emphasized that their martial arts camps aim to empower Muslim youth to defend themselves.

However, the timing of this training camp, under the banner "Learn Self Defence & Save Ummah," has raised eyebrows. It coincides with intelligence agencies' increased vigilance in Hyderabad and their anti-desecration drills at various places of worship. The camp's location at Hazrat Ujale-Shah Eid Gah Grounds in Akbarbagh, Saidabad, a communally sensitive area, further adds to the authorities' concerns.

The police's decision to shut down the camp reflects the delicate balance between ensuring public safety and respecting community initiatives. With the recent passing of DJS president Shaik Mahboob Ali in 2013, the organization's resurgence in training activities has prompted a cautious response from law enforcement. The closure of the camp may spark debates about the right to self-defense and the role of religious organizations in community empowerment, especially in light of recent social unrest.
