India's Bold Vision: Drug-Free by 2029

In a significant move towards a drug-free nation, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has set an ambitious target to eradicate illicit drugs from India by 2029. This announcement, made by Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai in the Rajya Sabha, comes on the heels of the government's deadline to eliminate Left-Wing Extremism by March 31, 2026. The Ministry's comprehensive strategy involves a three-year roadmap, urging stakeholders to dismantle the entire drug network, from source to abuse, by adopting a 'whole-of-government' approach.

Minister Rai emphasized the government's multi-pronged strategy to tackle the drug menace. The e-Sakshya portal, for instance, is a digital tool to aid police in evidence management, ensuring uniformity in investigations and potentially improving conviction rates. The Crime and Criminal Tracking Network System (CCTNS) interconnects police stations, facilitating data-driven investigations and policy formulation. Additionally, the National Intelligence Grid (NATGRID) provides access to financial records, aiding in tracing drug-related money flows.

The government's approach also targets cyber-enabled financial crimes. The Sahyog Portal, operated by the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre, coordinates actions against virtual digital asset service providers, including cryptocurrency platforms, by facilitating data sharing and asset tracking. Furthermore, the FIU's FINEX portal enables financial institutions to report suspicious transactions, aiding in identifying drug trafficking and money laundering activities.

With these initiatives, the government aims to disrupt the drug supply chain, enhance enforcement, and improve conviction rates. The collaboration between the National Forensic Sciences University and the Narcotics Control Bureau further strengthens India's fight against narcotics through advanced forensic techniques and research. This comprehensive strategy reflects the government's determination to address the drug issue holistically, leaving no stone unturned in its quest for a drug-free India.
