In a major victory for law enforcement, Sabah's police have dealt a significant blow to drug trafficking in the region, seizing an astonishing three tonnes of narcotics in a series of raids. This operation, codenamed 'Ops Coleoptera', has become the largest drug bust in the state's history, highlighting the scale and sophistication of the illegal trade.
The Inspector-General of Police, Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail, revealed the intricate details of the syndicate's operations. The group allegedly shipped cargo containers, disguised as machinery, from Port Klang to Sabah via sea routes. This strategic transit point was the first clue in unraveling the extensive network. On January 20th, the narcotics investigation team raided a house in Taman Landmark Penampang, arresting two local men and seizing a substantial amount of methamphetamine and ecstasy pills. This initial success led to a series of subsequent raids, each uncovering a staggering array of drugs, including meth, ecstasy, ketamine, cocaine, and Eremin pills.
The operation's reach extended beyond Sabah, with raids in Klang and neighboring countries, indicating a well-established, cross-border criminal enterprise. The total seizure, including drugs and assets, is valued at over RM174 million, enough to supply an alarming 16 million addicts with a single dose.
With five suspects charged and ongoing investigations, the police are determined to dismantle this syndicate. The authorities' commitment to increased patrols and raids at hotspots and transit points sends a clear message: the war on drug trafficking continues, and Sabah's police are at the forefront of this critical battle.
