In a dramatic turn of events, a routine anti-narcotics operation in Dombivli, Thane, led to a 30-minute struggle between police and a 6.5-foot-tall Nigerian national, resulting in a significant drug seizure worth over 2.16 crore rupees. This incident highlights the challenges faced by law enforcement in their relentless fight against the drug trade.
On Friday, a team of six officers, led by API Anil Gaikwad, embarked on a mission based on specific intelligence. Their target: a suspected drug supplier, allegedly en route to meet two associates in Ambernath. The operation, however, took an unexpected turn when the suspect, later identified as 36-or-year-old Williams Kaku, fiercely resisted arrest. In a display of sheer strength, Kaku pushed and shoved the officers, momentarily disrupting their efforts. Despite the resistance, the police persevered, eventually subduing the suspect after a prolonged struggle.
The operation's success was evident in the substantial drug haul. The police confiscated 1 kg and 4 grams of MD drugs, valued at approximately 12 crore rupees, and 15 grams of cocaine worth over 1.15 crore rupees. The total value of the seized narcotics exceeded 12.16 crore rupees, underscoring the magnitude of the potential threat to public health and safety. The operation also led to the arrest of two Ambernath residents, Avinash Venkatesh (34) and autorickshaw driver Gajendra Naidu (34), who were allegedly involved in the drug transaction.
With the arrests and drug seizure, the police have made a significant dent in the local drug trade. Deputy Commissioner of Police Atul Zende emphasized the ongoing efforts to verify Kaku's identity and local connections, given his alleged involvement in previous drug-related cases in Mumbai. The operation is part of a broader crackdown on drug trafficking in the Kalyan division, where intensified efforts in 2025 led to 101 narcotics-related cases, 146 arrests, and over 16 crore rupees worth of drugs seized. As the investigation unfolds, the police aim to unravel the supply chain and bring those involved in narcotics trafficking to justice.
