Heavy rainfall over the past two days has led to severe flooding in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, resulting in the cancellation of over 20 trains and the diversion of more than 30. Andhra Pradesh has been particularly hard-hit, with several villages in Vijayawada Rural Mandal, including Ambapuram, Nainavaram, Nunna, and Pathapadu, completely submerged. Rescue operations by the police, NDRF, and SDRF have been initiated, relocating over 13,000 residents to safer areas.
Tragically, nine people have lost their lives in the floods, with six deaths reported in landslides in Vijayawada and three in a car washed away by floodwaters in Guntur district. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has announced an ex gratia of Rs 5 lakh for the families of the deceased. The government is utilizing technologies such as drones to assess the damage and coordinate relief efforts.
The weather office has issued warnings for more heavy rainfall in coastal Andhra Pradesh and parts of Odisha due to a low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal, which may intensify into a deep depression. The Secunderabad-bound Vande Bharat Express from Visakhapatnam has also been canceled due to waterlogging at Rayanapadu station in Vijayawada.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation, urging residents in affected areas to stay vigilant and follow safety protocols.
