Tripura Drug Bust: Uncovering a Multi-Million-Rupee Meth Trade

In a significant blow to the illicit drug trade, a joint operation by the Assam Rifles and the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has led to the seizure of a massive quantity of methamphetamine tablets, valued at a staggering Rs 45 crore. This operation, conducted in the northeastern state of Tripura, sheds light on the growing narcotics menace in the region and the relentless efforts of law enforcement agencies to combat it.

On Monday, authorities intercepted a truck in Khowai district, acting on confidential information. The thorough search that ensued revealed a hidden stash of approximately 4.5 lakh methamphetamine tablets, commonly known as 'Yaba' or 'party tablets'. These highly addictive drugs, banned in India, contain a potent mixture of methamphetamine and caffeine, earning them the nickname 'crazy drug'. The estimated street value of the seized drugs underscores the magnitude of this operation's success.

The operation also resulted in the arrest of a 42-year-old man, Hafijul Hoque, from Assam's Udalguri district. Hoque's apprehension and the recovered contraband have been transferred to the DRI for further investigation and legal action. This collaborative effort between the Assam Rifles and the DRI demonstrates their unwavering dedication to eradicating drug trafficking and protecting the region's well-being.

The recent crackdown also highlights the strategic role of Myanmar in the drug trade. With an extensive, unfenced border shared with several northeastern states, Myanmar serves as a gateway for heroin and methamphetamine to infiltrate India. The seizure of foreign-made cigarettes, valued at Rs 2.9 crore, in a separate operation further emphasizes the need for heightened vigilance and continued collaboration between security forces and intelligence agencies to stem the tide of illegal substances.
