Congress and AAP in Negotiations for Haryana Assembly Elections Alliance

The Congress and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) are engaged in high-stakes negotiations to form an alliance for the Haryana Assembly elections scheduled for October 5. This move follows their collaboration in the recent Lok Sabha polls. The Congress is aiming to solidify its position against the BJP by joining forces with the AAP, but the seat-sharing discussions are proving to be complex. The Congress has proposed offering five to seven of the 90 Assembly seats to the AAP, while the latter is demanding nine.

Challenges and Political Dynamics

The AAP is particularly interested in seats along the Haryana borders with Delhi and Punjab, where it currently holds power. However, internal dissent within the Congress adds another layer of difficulty. Key Congress leaders, including Bhupinder Singh Hooda, are wary of sharing seats and are confident of their chances without an alliance. On the other hand, Rahul Gandhi and other senior leaders are pushing for the alliance to prevent vote splitting and enhance their electoral prospects. The Congress Central Election Committee (CEC) has already approved candidates for 66 of the 90 seats, underscoring the urgency of finalizing the alliance.
