In Hyderabad, police have connected a series of chain-snatching incidents that took place on January 8 to the notorious Bawaria gang, also known as the “chaddi baniyan” gang. This group, originally from Uttar Pradesh, has previously been involved in similar crimes in cities like Bengaluru.
To catch the suspects, the Hyderabad City Police, along with Rachakonda police, have set up 12 special teams. These teams are actively searching for the accused in tribal and nomadic communities such as Ghumantu, Mewati, Saasi, Bhaatu, and Kangda across several states, including Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand, and Haryana.
The Bawaria gang, known for its long history of criminal activities, is often linked to burglary, assault, and chain snatching. According to police officials, the gang typically targets houses located near roads or railway tracks. Their method involves men carrying out the crimes, while women and sometimes even children conduct surveillance. They often pose as traders selling clothes or utensils to identify easy targets.
Police also noted that the gang is highly skilled at avoiding CCTV detection and usually escapes by road to their native places on the same night. Despite Hyderabad having a strong CCTV network, investigators were able to identify the gang based on their distinctive way of operating.
Gathering information has not been easy. Many locals in these regions were initially unwilling to cooperate, and common names made identification difficult. However, with assistance from local police and by analyzing CCTV footage, authorities have managed to identify some suspects.
