Shoddy Investigation Leads to Acquittals in Drug Cases in Hyderabad

In Hyderabad, several drug-related cases investigated by the city police have ended in acquittal due to poor investigation practices. Despite frequent claims of cracking down on drug suppliers and peddlers, the police have often failed to prove the guilt of the accused in court. Many of these cases were handled by the Anti Narcotics Cell (ANC), a specialized wing of the Hyderabad City Police.

Courts have pointed out that investigators failed to follow mandatory legal guidelines, leading to weak cases. In one instance from 2014, Task Force officials arrested a worker from Uttar Pradesh along with three others in Secunderabad and seized drugs. However, forensic analysis by the Forensic Science Laboratory revealed that the samples did not match the drugs claimed by the police.

In another case from September 2016, drugs were seized but sent for forensic analysis only after a delay of nearly two weeks. The court observed that there was no clarity on where the seized substances were stored during this period, and the delay was not justified by the investigating officer, casting serious doubt on the case.

In a separate incident in June 2016, police acted on a tip-off and claimed to have seized drugs from two individuals in a car. However, during court proceedings, officers admitted that the accused were actually outside the vehicle at the time of arrest. This contradiction, along with other lapses, led the court to acquit the accused.

Overall, these cases highlight serious procedural flaws and lapses in investigation, which have weakened prosecution efforts and allowed accused individuals to go free.
