Telangana's Political Tug-of-War: CM Revanth's Nomination Push

The political landscape of Telangana is witnessing a unique power play as Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy takes a proactive approach to secure the positions of two key figures in his administration. On April 19th, accompanied by Legislative Affairs Minister D Sridhar Babu and Rajya Sabha MP Vem Narender Reddy, Revanth met with Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla at Lok Bhavan, urging him to approve the nominations of Minorities Welfare Minister Mohammed Azharuddin and academic activist M Kodandaram to the Telangana Legislative Council.

This move comes amid a series of legal and administrative hurdles. The Chief Minister's request follows a similar appeal made by Chief Secretary K Ramakrishna Rao and Advocate General A Sudarshan Reddy to the Governor a day earlier. The nominations of Azharuddin and Kodandaram, recommended by the Telangana Cabinet in August 2025, have been pending for over six months. This delay has put Azharuddin, who is not a member of the Legislative Assembly or Council, in a constitutionally precarious position, as he must secure a seat by April 30 to remain in the Cabinet.

The recent Supreme Court observation, stating that the state government is free to pursue the issue with the Governor, has added a layer of complexity. The Court's stay on the appointment of Kodandaram and Amer Ali Khan as MLCs in 2024, due to a petition challenging the nominations, has set a precedent. The petitioners, Dasoju Sravan and Kurra Satyanarayana of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), argued that the appointments violated interim orders. The Court's decision to subject future appointments to ongoing legal proceedings has made the Governor's approval process even more critical.

With the clock ticking for Azharuddin's tenure and the state government's confidence in the Governor's nod, the coming days will be crucial. The outcome will not only shape the composition of the Telangana Legislative Council but also reflect the delicate balance between executive and judicial powers in the state's political arena.
