Backlash Over Controversial Curriculum
The National Medical Commission (NMC) has withdrawn its Competency Based Medical Education (CBME) guidelines for 2024, following widespread criticism. Released on August 31, 2024, the guidelines included controversial topics, such as categorizing sodomy and lesbianism as unnatural sexual offenses, which sparked outrage from various groups. Two international organizations working in disability inclusion and transgender health threatened to seek NMC’s suspension over these inclusions, leading to heightened scrutiny of the curriculum.
NMC's Response and Future Actions
In response to the backlash, the NMC issued a circular on Thursday announcing the immediate withdrawal and cancellation of the CBME guidelines, stating that they would be revised and reissued after further review. The NMC assured that updated guidelines would be published soon, following approval from the relevant authorities. The decision underscores the importance of sensitivity in framing educational content, especially in medical fields, where inclusion and accuracy are critical.
The withdrawn guidelines were intended for MBBS students, set to take effect from the 2024-25 academic year. However, this controversy has prompted the NMC to reassess its approach before the final curriculum is implemented.
