Telangana Agitators Demand Freedom Fighter Status

In a recent development, the Telangana High Court has raised a thought-provoking question: Can those who fought for the state's formation be considered freedom fighters? This query comes as nine individuals, including a woman, have petitioned the court, seeking benefits equivalent to those granted to freedom fighters who fought against colonial rule.

The petitioners, claiming to have participated in the Telangana movement, are demanding 250 square yards of land, Rs 5 lakh for housing, and Rs 10 lakh as health insurance. They believe these promises were made by political parties during the 2023 assembly election campaign. However, Justice B Vijaysen Reddy has expressed concern about the potential floodgates this could open. He stated, "You might have sacrificed, but without an enforceable right or government policy, you cannot claim these benefits."

The court's dilemma is understandable. While acknowledging the petitioners' contributions, Justice Reddy highlighted the absence of a specific policy for Telangana agitators. In contrast, victims of left-wing extremism, families affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, and those displaced by irrigation projects have received compensation due to existing policies. The judge's apprehension is not unfounded, as he envisions a scenario where millions could make similar claims, creating an administrative challenge.

The petitioners' counsel, Karunakar Reddy, informed the court that his clients had approached the government based on election promises. With the matter now in the spotlight, the state government's response is awaited. This case not only tests the boundaries of political promises but also raises questions about the criteria for recognizing and rewarding various forms of public service and sacrifice.
