Telangana BJP Chief Detained Before Anti-Congress Protest

In a swift move, Telangana police placed the state's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President, N. Ramchander Rao, under house arrest on Saturday, thwarting a planned protest outside Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy's residence. This action was in response to the BJP's call for demonstrations against the Indian National Congress's stance on the Women's Reservation Bill in Parliament.

The BJP's youth wing, Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), had already set the stage for confrontation the previous evening with a protest in Hyderabad. They burned an effigy of Rahul Gandhi and accused the Congress of obstructing the Women's Reservation Bill. This local protest was part of a larger strategy; the BJP and its National Democratic Alliance (NDA) partners announced a nationwide campaign targeting the opposition, with coordinated demonstrations at district headquarters across India.

The BJP's campaign aims to expose the opposition's role in what they call a "historic leap for gender equality." The party instructed its state units to mobilise public opinion in favour of the bill, emphasising the government's commitment to increasing women's representation in legislative bodies. However, the BJP-led government's recent attempt to pass the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2026, failed to secure the required majority in the Lok Sabha, with 298 votes in favour and 230 against.

The bill was part of a package of three, including the Delimitation Bill and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, designed to implement the Women's Reservation framework from the 2029 general elections. Opposition parties, however, objected to linking reservation with delimitation and census exercises, advocating for the women's quota to be implemented immediately. As the political drama unfolds, the BJP's campaign and the government's legislative efforts highlight the ongoing struggle for gender equality in Indian politics.
