In a significant development, Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy of Telangana has vowed to fix the troubled Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Scheme, rejecting any notion of scrapping the project. This decision comes amidst allegations of irregularities and corruption in the project's design, construction, and finances during the previous BRS government's tenure.
During a recent inspection of the Medigadda barrage, accompanied by ministers and technical experts, CM Revanth emphasized a dual approach: repairing the damaged infrastructure and holding accountable those responsible for any wrongdoing. He asserted that the project would be made beneficial for the people, addressing the irrigation and drinking water needs it was originally intended to fulfill.
The Chief Minister pointed out that the project's redesign, which led to a massive cost escalation from Rs 38,000 crore to Rs 1.5 lakh crore, was driven by political and financial interests. He accused the former administration of using the project for publicity while neglecting structural issues. CM Revanth also cited multiple reports, including those from the National Dam Safety Authority and a judicial commission, which indicated deficiencies in design, construction, and maintenance.
In a strong statement, Revanth Reddy warned of an agitation if the Central government further delays ordering a CBI probe into the alleged irregularities. He claimed that the state government has repeatedly requested a comprehensive investigation, and the Telangana Assembly has also passed a resolution to this effect. The Chief Minister's determination to address the project's issues and ensure accountability promises a significant political and administrative challenge in the coming days.
