Brutal Murder of Former Pune Corporator Vanraj Andekar Linked to Gang Rivalries

Vanraj Andekar, a former corporator of the Pune Municipal Corporation and a member of Ajit Pawar’s faction of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), was brutally murdered on Sunday night in Pune. The incident occurred around 9:30 PM in the Nana Peth area, where Andekar was attacked by a group of unidentified assailants. According to the police, the attackers fired five rounds at him and assaulted him with long-blade sickles. Andekar was quickly rushed to a nearby hospital but was declared dead on arrival. His body was later taken to Sassoon Hospital for postmortem.

The police have launched a thorough investigation into the crime. Special teams have been formed to trace the culprits, and several suspects, including Ganesh Komkar, the son-in-law of a known gangster, have been detained for questioning. The Joint Commissioner of Police, Ranjan Kumar Sharma, stated that the motive behind the attack is still unclear, although some known individuals are being interrogated. Initial reports suggest that the attack may be linked to past enmity or gang-related disputes. Andekar's family has a history of involvement in criminal activities, particularly his father, Suryakant Andekar, who is a history-sheeter with a record of murder and extortion.

Andekar came from a politically prominent family in Pune. He was elected as a corporator in the 2017 elections, and his mother, Rajashree Andekar, his uncle, Udaykanta Andekar, and his sister, Vatsala Andekar, have also held key political positions, with Vatsala having served as the Mayor of Pune. Despite the family's political stature, they have long been associated with criminal activities through the Andekar gang, led by Vanraj’s father. Gang rivalries and a recent escalation in violence, including a failed assassination attempt on another gang member, may have contributed to Andekar’s murder.

The murder has sent shockwaves through Pune, with the police and crime branch working intensively to uncover the details of the crime and bring the perpetrators to justice. As investigations continue, the focus remains on the involvement of local gangs and the underlying tensions that may have led to this violent act.
