Veteran Indian cricketer Rohit Sharma has announced his immediate retirement from Test cricket, ending a significant chapter in his career. The 37-year-old confirmed the news via social media, expressing his gratitude for representing India in whites. Rohit will continue to play ODI cricket, where he remains the national team captain.
Rohit's Test journey spanned 67 matches, in which he scored 4301 runs at an average of 40.57, including 12 centuries and 18 fifties. His highest score — a commanding 212 — came against South Africa in 2019. Known for his composed leadership, Rohit captained India during a challenging phase, including a recent 3-0 loss to New Zealand and a 3-1 series defeat in Australia, where his own form dipped sharply. Across eight Tests in that period, he averaged just 10.93 and managed only one half-century.
After skipping the final Test in Sydney citing form issues, Rohit made a brief return to domestic cricket but continued to struggle. Despite leading India to a Champions Trophy victory earlier this year, he made it clear that Test cricket was no longer part of his future plans.
BCCI President Roger Binny paid tribute to Rohit, calling him a player whose influence went beyond numbers. “He brought calmness and discipline to the team, setting high standards both on and off the field,” Binny said in an official statement.
With India’s five-Test tour of England set to begin on June 20, selectors must now identify a new red-ball captain. Vice-captain Jasprit Bumrah is one option, but his fitness and workload remain concerns.
