Operation Sindoor (May 7, 2025)

On May 7, 2025, India launched Operation Sindoor, a high-precision military operation targeting terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir. The strikes were carried out in retaliation for a series of deadly attacks in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, allegedly orchestrated by Pakistan-based terror outfits Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM).

The operation was meticulously planned and executed by the Indian Armed Forces, focusing on nine strategic locations believed to be hubs for terror training, logistics, and command operations. These included suspected launchpads, ammunition depots, and safe houses used by militants.

Indian forces deployed a formidable array of advanced weapon systems. Rafale fighter jets led the air assault, equipped with SCALP long-range cruise missiles and AASM Hammer precision-guided bombs, ensuring minimal collateral damage while maximizing impact. Complementing the air strikes, BrahMos cruise missiles were launched from land-based platforms, and loitering munitions provided real-time surveillance and strike capability against mobile or time-sensitive targets.

The entire operation lasted approximately 23 minutes, and according to Indian defense officials, it was designed to be “focused, measured, and non-escalatory.” Indian authorities emphasized that the strikes were limited to terrorist infrastructure and did not target civilian or military assets unrelated to terrorism.

Operation Sindoor marks a continuation of India’s evolving doctrine of preemptive and precise counter-terror strikes, following earlier operations such as the 2016 surgical strikes and the 2019 Balakot airstrike. Indian officials have framed the mission as both a tactical and symbolic message — reinforcing India’s resolve to combat terrorism emanating from across the border, while seeking to avoid broader military escalation.

While details on casualties and damage assessments remain classified, early reports suggest significant disruption to terrorist networks operating in the targeted regions. International response has so far been measured, with several countries urging restraint while acknowledging India’s right to self-defense.
