Tata to Double iPhone Casing Production Capacity at Hosur Plant to 100,000 Units

Tata Electronics is set to expand its manufacturing capacity for Apple iPhone enclosures at its Hosur plant in Tamil Nadu. The company plans to double its current capacity from 50,000 enclosures to 100,000 units. This expansion is aimed at meeting the increasing demand for Apple's products, particularly in preparation for the annual product launches, which typically take place in September. The planned increase in capacity is considered a significant step in the second phase of development for the Hosur facility, which had previously been disrupted by a fire in September of the previous year. After the fire, operations were temporarily halted, but the facility has since resumed production at pre-fire levels.

This capacity expansion comes at a time when Apple is increasingly looking at India as a crucial hub for its global manufacturing strategy. Apple CEO Tim Cook recently emphasized the importance of India as the primary country of origin for the majority of iPhones sold in the U.S. by the June quarter. This move is part of Apple's broader strategy to shift its manufacturing away from China amid rising trade tensions and tariff issues. The expansion at Tata’s Hosur plant is directly aligned with this shift in Apple’s supply chain strategy.

Tata Electronics has been making strategic moves to strengthen its position in Apple’s supply chain. In early 2025, the company acquired a controlling stake in Pegatron Technology India (PTI), following its acquisition of Wistron’s operations in Narsapura, Karnataka, in March 2024. These acquisitions highlight Tata’s increasing role as a major player in Apple’s Indian manufacturing ecosystem. The expansion of Tata’s operations is part of a broader trend, with other Apple suppliers like Foxconn also ramping up their investments in India. Foxconn is constructing new factories in Bengaluru and Hyderabad, further underscoring Apple’s commitment to diversifying its manufacturing base in India. These moves reflect a strategic shift to de-risk Apple's supply chain and strengthen its manufacturing capabilities in India.
