The southern Indian state of Kerala has postponed the reopening of schools, planned for tomorrow, Monday, June 1, by a day, to June 2, due to the ongoing protests against the Centre over the blocking of the PM SHRI scheme, intended to improve the infrastructure in schools, statewide. This has been confirmed by the State's Education Minister, V.Srinivasan.
The minister added that the state government would file a review petition against the centre in the Supreme Court, challenging the latter's decision to withhold the funds, and explore other legal options. The funds, allocated by the Centre, were meant to be divided across 8,000 schools in the state, enhancing the learning environment through improved infrastructure.
The indefinite protest, which has seen the closure of schools across the state, began after the Centre decided to withhold the funds, pending an audit, with many alleging that the move was politically motivated. The state government has argued that the audit was merely a pretext to deny funds to Kerala, as no other state had been subjected to such scrutiny.
The minister concluded by stating that the state would not hesitate to use all legal avenues available to it to ensure that the rights of Kerala's children are protected, implying that the fight against the Centre would be a long and protracted one.
The state government, however, hasn't commented on when the schools would reopen after June 2, amid the ongoing protests.
