Kerala has commenced its ten-day Onam celebrations with the vibrant Athachamayam procession in Thripunithura, Ernakulam district, held on Friday. This annual event marks the beginning of the Onam festival, a significant cultural and religious celebration in the state.

Highlights of the Parade

The Athachamayam parade showcased a dazzling array of traditional art forms and cultural performances. Highlights included:

  • Traditional Art Forms: The parade featured performances such as pulikali (tiger dance), kavadiyattam (a ritualistic dance), and karakattam (a dance with decorated pots).
  • Visual Spectacle: The procession was adorned with vivid umbrellas, caparisoned elephants, and elaborate floats.
  • Folk Performances: The vibrant display was complemented by folk dance performances, adding to the festive atmosphere.

Schedule and Pinnacle Event

The Onam festivities will continue until September 17, with the major highlight being "Thiruvonam" on September 15. This day is considered the most important of the Onam celebrations, bringing together various cultural and religious activities.
