The BJP-led government at the centre is attempting to centralise authority and erode the powers of the states, according to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin.
Stalin, also the president of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party, claimed that the BJP was consistently using Governors to interfere in the affairs of the opposition-ruled states. He highlighted the centre's moves to defer the release of the Rajinikanth-starred movie 'Kaala', and the dismissal of state officials, as examples of such interference.
Speaking at a rally organised by the DMK on Sunday to protest against the centre's actions, Stalin urged the people to unite and rally against the BJP's divisive politics. He asserted that the BJP's recent decisions to interfere in state matters have galvanised the opposition to unite and fight for their rights.
Stalin's comments come after a week of protests in Tamil Nadu, where the state's Congress and DMK units criticised the centre for blocking the launch of 'Amma Makkal Munnettra Kazagam' (AMMK), a new political party formed by expelled AIADMK leader T.T.V. Dhinakaran.
The protests come amidst increasing tensions between the AIADMK and the DMK-led state government, with the centre recently asserting its jurisdiction over the Kaveri River Water Management Authority, appointing a new Governor to the state, and divesting the state's health and family welfare department of its vaccination duties.
Stalin's comments provide a stark critique of the BJP-led government's handling of state matters, and with state elections due in the next year, signal a strengthening of opposition alliances and a potential boost for the DMK ahead of the polls.
