Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday drew inspiration from Poonch district, which has historically been a beacon of unity among Hindus, Muslims, and Sikhs in the region.

Speaking at a civic reception in Jammu, Abdullah noted the recent shelling by Pakistani troops had created a "war-like situation" in the region, with Poonch bearing the brunt of the attack.

He urged those who had evacuated their homes and communities for their safety to return, assuring them of comprehensive protection by the state government.

"Poonch has always been a shining example of unity, amity, and brotherhood among Hindus, Muslims, and Sikhs," Abdullah said, adding, "I hope the people of Poonch, Rajauri, and Jammu will always keep this spirit of unity alive and not allow any force to break the great legacy of this place."

Abdullah's comments came as Jammu and Kashmir police reported violent protests against the recent spike in shelling from across the Pakistani border, with at least four people killed in clashes with security forces.

The situation remains tense in Jammu and Kashmir, with Indian authorities accusing Pakistan of deliberately triggering the border clashes ahead of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's first visit to the region earlier this month.

Modi has accused Pakistan of fomenting terrorism in the region and vowed to pursue a tough stance against Islamabad.
