Revenue leakages worry Telangana Cabinet

As the Telangana government deals with a financial emergency, the state's Cabinet committee on resource mobilisation met on Wednesday to find ways to boost revenue.

Led by Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka, the committee discussed ways to prevent revenue losses and improve income streams.

Dr. Bhatti Vikramarka directed the Excise Department officials to identify the sources and reasons for the revenue leakages immediately. He asked them to come up with a comprehensive plan to plug these gaps and to work with field officers to implement it.

The meeting came as the Telangana government faces criticism for failing to increase state revenue. The state's financial situation has become critical, with a massive deficit and pending loans repayable amounting to 2,29,581 crore as of March 31, 2022.

The committee discussed revising fees for services provided by different government departments and enhancing the revenue potential of the Mines and Geology Department.

The meeting was attended by ministers Krishnaiah, Gangula Kamalakar, and Rajender, along with senior officials.

The committee has directed all the departments to boost their revenue collections by implementing the newly suggested guidelines and to ensure that the resource gap in the state's budget is bridged.

There are expectations that the government will take stringent measures to enhance revenue as the financial crisis continues to bite, with fears of adverse ratings and criticism for failing to improve the state's finances.

Only time will tell what measures the government will take and whether they will be enough to ease the crisis.

Given the severity of the situation, all eyes are on the actions that the Telangana government will take next to address this critical problem.
